Combining the Old and the New

A few years ago we were asked to design and build a home that looked and felt like it had been built in 2 time periods 1750 and 1820. Odd as that may sound the owners lived in an actual house that was originally built in 1750 and had been added onto in 1820.  On top of that the old home was located right next door to where we built this house on Old North Rd. in Kingston RI. The goal was to have the exterior footprint be similar along with the trim and scale, but be somewhat smaller than the original, and be energy efficient and as maintenance free as possible. The result shown in pictures above and below was a brand new historic district home that has solar heat and hot water, spray foam insulation and radiant heat. The interior pictures are from the 1750 part of the home. The beams around the fire place are real beams from that vintage recycled and used to bring a sense of authenticity. The owners furnishings are from roughly that time to add to the authentic effect. The exterior is all modern materials, Azek cellular PVC trim, Andersen windows, and Hardi plank siding. Along with radiant heat it also has high velocity central Air. Even the exterior and interior paint colors are authentic and chosen by the owner. The exterior in particular is a color called beet root and really does add to the old look of the house. Basic floor plan is at the bottom of this page. (the actual house has the single upstairs bath converted to 2 full baths it was a running change)
